Explore the options below to learn how you can become a part of the Farm & Wilderness Legacy Circle.

A charitable bequest—a gift included in your will or trust—offers a meaningful way to support Farm & Wilderness's future while maintaining complete flexibility during your lifetime. You keep full control of your assets, can modify your plans as needed, and create a lasting impact without affecting your current financial security. Working with an advisor, you can easily include language that ensures your love for F&W continues for generations to come.

Sample Language for Unrestricted Bequests

- Specific Dollar Amount: "I give and bequeath to Farm & Wilderness Foundation, Inc., a Vermont nonprofit corporation located in Plymouth, Vermont (Federal Tax ID #03-0228965), the sum of $__ to be used for its general charitable purposes."

Your retirement accounts and life insurance policies can create meaningful support for Farm & Wilderness while potentially reducing taxes for both you and your family.

Retirement Account Gifts

Qualified Charitable Distribution: If you're 70½ or older, you can donate directly from your IRA to Farm & Wilderness without paying taxes on the distribution. The amount you can give varies based on your personal situation and can count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD).
Name Us as Beneficiary: Designating Farm & Wilderness to receive all or part of your 401(k), 403(b), or IRA eliminates income taxes on those assets and can reduce your estate's tax burden. Retirement accounts face heavy taxation when passed to heirs, but transfer to charities is completely tax-free.

Life Insurance Gifts
Change Your Beneficiary: Designate Farm & Wilderness to receive the proceeds of a life insurance policy if you no longer need the coverage for family financial security. This costs nothing now but can create a significant future gift.
Transfer Ownership: Give us an existing policy and receive an immediate tax deduction for its current value. You can continue paying premiums as additional charitable gifts.

A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) is a simple contract between you and a sponsoring organization that allows you to make a generous gift to Farm & Wilderness while receiving fixed, guaranteed payments for life. We are proud to partner with Friends Fiduciary Corporation (FFC) to offer this powerful tool for philanthropic planning.

How does it work?
A CGA provides a fixed lifetime income payment to you as the donor(s), or to one or two life income beneficiaries (annuitants) you may designate. After the death of the annuitant(s), the remainder of the gift is transferred to Farm & Wilderness’s account at Friends Fiduciary.

Benefits of a CGA

  • Fixed Income: You receive fixed payments for a set period or for life based on the rates recommended by the American Council on Gift Annuities.

  • Tax Advantages: You’ll receive an immediate charitable deduction in the year you establish the CGA, and a portion of the annual income amount is typically tax-free.

  • Peace of Mind: Rest assured that your investment and all aspects of gift administration are managed professionally and in compliance with state and federal regulations.

A charitable remainder trust (CRT) is an irrevocable trust that generates a potential income stream for its income beneficiaries, with the remainder of the donated assets eventually going to Farm & Wilderness.

Charitable remainder trusts are typically funded with highly appreciated long-term property. The CRT is structured so that there is a current beneficiary, who is either the donor or a named individual, and a remainder charitable beneficiary,  in this case F&W. The CRT can provide the income beneficiary with either a fixed amount each year or a percentage of the value of the trust each year, for the income beneficiary’s life or for a period not to exceed 20 years.

The donor establishing the CRT can take a charitable deduction against the income or gift tax for the present value of the trust’s assets that are expected to pass to F&W.

"Farm & Wilderness taught me the importance of community and living simply with the land. The friendships I made and the confidence I gained there shaped who I became as an adult. I want to ensure future generations have that same opportunity to grow and discover themselves in such a special place."

— Sarah Mitchell, Attended Timberlake 1978-1982, Legacy Circle Member

"Watching our daughter transform during her summers at Flying Cloud was incredible. She came home more independent, more confident, and with a deep love for nature that continues today. We know that F&W's financial assistance made her experience possible, so we want to pay it forward for other families."

— David and Maria Santos, Parents of Flying Cloud Camper, Legacy Circle Members

"I've been involved with Farm & Wilderness for over three decades—first as a camper, then staff, and now as a parent. F&W isn't just part of my story; it's woven into who I am. Including F&W in my will feels like the natural way to ensure this incredible community continues to thrive."

— Michael Chen, Multi-generational F&W Family, Legacy Circle Member
