Fulfill Internship Requirements Working at F&W this Summer! - Farm & Wilderness

Written by Julie Sanderson - Human Resources Manager | March 03, 2020

If you have worked a summer at Farm & Wilderness in the past, then you know what an unforgettable experience it is.  Not only do you get to work with amazing young people, but also an incredibly passionate, hardworking, and supportive group of fellow staff members. In my role, I often hear staff describe their experience in a way that sounds just as transformative as it is for campers.  It is one of the reasons I love my job – knowing that staff grows as people while they are here.  I also believe that working at camp is one of the best life skill and job training experiences out there!

This experience includes practical skills for any future job like communication, leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, project management, and work ethic, to name a few.  All of these are practiced while working long days and navigating camp life, including living and communicating with different personality types.  Our employees are problem solvers who are adaptable when circumstances change.

It is common to hear from summer staff that they’d love to come back and work at F&W but can’t because they need to get an internship for college.  What many people don’t know is that you can use your experience working at F&W to fulfill your internship or independent study requirements.  Past internships/independent study positions have included cooks, counselors, activity heads, trip coordinators, trip leaders, program directors, photographers, and many more that are not listed here.  Internships are open to all our staff, including first-year staff members.

The steps to becoming an intern are:

  1. Apply for a position at camp and include a note about your intention to use this as an internship or independent study.
  2. Speak with an advisor at your college and learn about the internship requirements for your area of study (objectives, hours required, projects to be completed, etc.).
  3. Discuss the requirements with your Camp Director.
  4. Fill in and submit the proposal to your school!
  5. Come to Camp!
