Food in the 1st Week of Camp - Farm & Wilderness

Written by Sam Arfer | June 19, 2019

At Farm & Wilderness, we understand the importance of good, healthy food. A cold rainy day can be transformed by a lunch of grilled cheese and tomato soup just as a bowl of cold fruit salad can give you a whole new outlook on a hot and muggy afternoon.

The foods we serve in the first few days of camp are chosen very carefully, to assure campers that they’re going to be well taken care of. Comfort foods are the order of the day with familiar favorites like spaghetti, rice and beans, tacos, and baked chicken on the menu. Other favorites include homemade bread, fresh from the garden salads, milk from our own cows, quiche, corn chowder, and broccoli in garlic sauce. Of course, we always offer alternatives for campers who are gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or have allergies.

We also try, especially in the first week of the session, to serve foods separately whenever possible. For instance, when we serve stir-fry, the rice, tofu, chicken, vegetables, and sauce are all served in separate bowls. Rather than making enchiladas, we’ll do a burrito bar, with all toppings available, but nothing mixed together. This way, a camper gets to be in control of their own dinner.

Often in the first few days of camp, the head cook will hang up a large sheet of paper asking, “What do you want to eat this summer?” Some great ideas and some delicious meals (some supervised by campers!) have come from this.

Mealtimes are a great time to socialize and make some new friends. They’re also a great time for counselors to observe/check in on their campers. Are they happy? Are they eating? What did they do this afternoon? Who are they talking to?

If you have any concerns about what your camper is eating, or anything else, don’t hesitate to reach out.  We believe that great food = happy campers and we have a lot of happy campers.

Happy cooking!
