First Week, First Naming - Farm & Wilderness

Written by Pam Podger | July 11, 2016

Greetings Flying Cloud Community,

The summer is in full swing and the Cloud is once again alive with the sounds of triumph and exertion as campers explore new and challenging pursuits like bow drill, songwriting, rod less fishing, poetry, flute making, improvisational acting, bow making and much, much more. A passion for learning thrives in campers and staff alike, and the session is rich with the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and abilities.

Our recent Naming Ceremony, the first of four this year, has been a highlight of the summer. Flying Cloud names are given to honor a person’s best and most unique characteristics, which our community recognizes during the ceremony. These names are derived from the environment where we live and are often natural, although some names reference man-made objects and actions of special status and significance.

Those campers chosen to be named begin the ceremony with a 24-hour quest for the sake of wilderness reverie and self-reflection. The ceremony culminates with the lighting of a great fire constructed entirely by campers, which casts a glow on the night’s stories, dances, and the giving of the names.

Please join us in welcoming our newly named brethren into the Farm & Wilderness community:

Zephyr & Bear

Canopy Light

River at Dawn

Raven’s Echo

Weaving Hawk

Tending Flame

Shoreline Circle

And our newly named staff member,

Dancing Maple – Dylan Agli

Hopefully these names will challenge and inspire these individuals to be their best and truest selves even after their time at F&W comes to an end.

Until next time,

Charlie W.
