A Strong Start at Flying Cloud - Farm & Wilderness

Written by Pam Podger | July 04, 2016

Hello from the woods:

While the sky was deciding whether or not to pour rain on us during Opening Day, it certainly had no hesitation the next night. Eventually, the rains ceased and there is nothing quite as uniquely lovely as a blue sky after a storm. We here in the clearing look forward to many sun-filled summer days as we leap into the first activities of the session!

The first night of camp was spent in ceremony, as campers and staff alike tested their friction fire skills during the Friendship Fire. Song and story echoed through the Roundhouse and we bent to our efforts, turning the energy of the night into a coal that would light the fires of Flying Cloud for the entirety of the session.

The second day of camp found us training for life at FC. We learned how to safely use fire and blades, and how to do chores in order to provide for our community. Afterwards, we retired to our lodges and worked on what one might call “home improvement”: Waterproofing bunks, building wood shelters, putting up shelving for books and personal items, and generally beautifying out woodland homes.

As I write this now, our campers are engaging in afternoon activities, from journaling and creative writing to camouflage and bow drill efforts. We’re carving spoons. We’re day tripping to Sliding Rocks. We’re fishing in the pond and taking in the sun.

We’re taking the summer by storm, so be sure to look out for that beautiful blue sky!
