Flying Cloud Counselors' Approach to Education - Farm & Wilderness

Written by Pam Podger | June 27, 2016

Hello Everyone:

As we draw closer to the summer starting I wanted to take a moment to introduce two folks you’ll be hearing from this summer in our blog posts. Langston and Charlie are long time Flying Clouders. Having both been campers and staff members for many years. They are stepping into new roles this summer, working closely with me to guide the Flying Cloud community on its many adventures. I am so excited to be working with them in this new capacity. They have both given so much to Flying Cloud over the years, I am sure they will make the most of this opportunity.

You’ll still be hearing from me from time to time, but in general you can expect to read blogs written by Charlie or Langston as the summer goes on. I hope you enjoy what they have to share!

Much love,

~FF~

Camp is just around the corner and we’ve been learning from one another how to live and thrive in the wilderness. The past few weeks have been devoted to honing our Outdoor Living Skills, First Aid abilities, and Social Justice issues. Our canvas homes once again stand with the trees, among them a new single-pole sibley tent and a beautiful handcrafted 16’ yurt.

Flying Cloud attracts campers who want to challenge themselves – young people looking for growth and to better their understanding of the world. Staff members were asked “How do you approach education?” Their answers give me certainty that this thirst for betterment will be rewarded. I’ll share those responses here, and hope that you all can share in the inspiration that I find in them.

“The teacher must be as willing to learn as the student.”

“Education, on any subject, should be approached from a variety of angles, both perspectives of different people and different disciplines.”

“Learning should be led by the student.”

“Education is an organic process. Every shared moment is a learning opportunity for all those involved.”

“Explain it. Practice it. Do it. Reflect.”

“Educating through communication. Talking with kids and trying to make everything very clear so they can do it on their own. Building a relationship of trust between the two people involved.”

I feel so much hope and excitement for this summer, and I’m glad to be able to share some of that excitement with you all.  See you in the woods in just a few days.

Take care,
Charlie W.
