A Passion for Learning - Farm & Wilderness

Written by Pam Podger | June 18, 2015

Hello Again Everyone:

With camp just around the bend, we’ve been busy learning about Outdoor Living Skills, Wilderness First Aid, caring for camper’s hearts, and so much more. The clearing and its surrounding woods are dotted with the future homes of campers and staff.

Summer camp doesn’t have to be just about fun, it’s our goal to take this opportunity to help campers leave Flying Cloud as young men hungry to learn more about the world they inhabit. So I ask every staff member, “How do you approach education?” Because their responses are so inspiring to me, I would love to share them with you:

By trying something we always learn something, whether we fail or succeed. After either, discussing how it went and how to improve next time is the best way to help people learn.

I work to create and foster a place and community where a person can feel that they are growing and improving, then also to feel safe when the going gets tough.

It does not have to be the bestowing of knowledge, but rather that the teacher can learn alongside the student.

Learning should be exciting and joyful. Always remember though that you’re doing it for other people; that’s what makes it matter.

Impart your wisdom gently. Don’t be afraid to learn with your students. Don’t be afraid to fail.

That definitely makes me feel ready to for this summer. Until our next installment, I hope you all find your way to the woods!

Be well and much love,

FF and M’sE
