New Barn is Under Way
June 5, 2009: Work on the new Livestock Barn has begun. The Livestock Barn will be replacing the Pole/Low Barn, which was lost to fire in late February. We have taken the opportunity to design a functional, simple building that meets the needs of our animal herds and fits in well next to our Farm Education Barn.
NBF architects designed the building, and we have attached one of the blueprints, which will give you an idea of the look of the barn, here . Naylor and Breen is the contractor on the building. NBF also designed the Indian Brook lodge, which was built by Naylor and Breen. Our neighbors at Mosher Excavating have been clearing the site over the past few weeks. We expect construction to begin in late June, with the basic building completed by mid-July.
Campers will be making many of the finishing touches on the barn. Campers will first build the new barn cupola. Once this is lifted into place by crane, the next camper project will be building all the sliding barn doors. They will finish the project by installing the siding, which is cut from F&W spruce trees near Flying Cloud.
This is a wonderful opportunity for Tamarack Farmers to help build a large and beautiful barn, and also to make certain we have a cozy place for all of our livestock next winter.
Summer Staff Lists!
The summer staff is already setting aside warm socks, musical instruments, sunblock and sleeping bags for the summer ahead. Summer staff for all the camps will be arriving at Farm & Wilderness in mid-June. First they'll spend Skills Week all together, renewing their Lifeguard certifications, learning how to pasteurize, and many other tasks. Then comes Staff Week at each camp, when the staff starts to put together the camp community that will welcome each camper as they arrive for their camp session.
We have many returning staff and a wonderful set of new staff; many were once campers, and we are also welcoming completely new people to Farm & Wilderness for the first time.You can read the lists of all the staff at each camp by following the links. (One caveat: these lists are current as of Spring Planting/Memorial Day weekend, and may change by early July as we finish hiring).
