About FC
Though it’s almost impossible to summarize, here’s my little blurb on Flying Cloud.
Flying Cloud is a Quaker-based wilderness skills camp for 40 11-14 year old boys on the side of Saltash Mountain, in Mount Holly, Vermont. We live as simply as we can, without phones or electricity, in simple canvas shelters like tipis, tents and “yomes”.
With the help of 15-18 staff, campers cook their own meals over an open fire, as well as baking our own bread in a wood-fired clay oven. We also pump all our own water from our clean, cold well and keep our food cold with ice cut from our pond in February and stored in the “Ice Mines”.
Every day, campers are expected to do chores in the morning such as pumping water, gathering or breaking up firewood, cooking for the camp or working in the garden.
Most of our food is purchased and packed in to camp a few times a week, but we also try to harvest wild edibles from the forest around us and grow some of our own food in a small garden.
Once the morning chores are completed, we spend the day doing crafts, playing games, exploring the forest around us and generally having a wonderful time in some of the most beautiful places anyone can find.
Before each meal we circle up as a community, to provide a moment of thanksgiving and so we can all see one another’s smiling faces.
At the end of the day, all filled up on a tasty dinner, we usually gather again as a community to play a rousing game, or tell stories or have a discussion. After that, we all head happily off to our sleeping bags and drift off to sleep by the light of a small fire, surrounded by our Flying Cloud brothers, all of whom are excited for one more day in the clearing.
To hear more about camp, please get in touch with me (ValleyZephyr@gmail.com) or contact the office to see when there’s a Farm & Wilderness gathering in your area. The best way to learn about camp is from other people who have been there, and we’re always happy to welcome new families into our community!
