Leadership
Farm & Wilderness is a leadership training organization. Our goal is to provide opportunities for program participants to experience effective and powerful leadership, to practice their own leadership in an honest and supportive environment, and to leave F&W with confidence and skill to lead in any situation.
The F&W leadership model operates on a few basic principles
- 80% of leadership is role modeling. Each person is a role model for others.
- Respect: how we behave towards others matters just as much as what we produce. Mutual respect is an integral part of our work ethic.
- We strive to create opportunities for leadership. If you can learn something, you can learn to teach it to others.
- Each person has a valuable leadership role to play; not all leaders lead from the front.
At F&W, there are many opportunities to learn and practice leadership. F&W staff members are expected to continually strive towards more effective leadership practices, and apply a high level of integrity in all aspects of their work. We foster an environment where a discussion of leadership is on-going—its relevance, efficacy, style, power and dynamics. It is our goal to pass this ethic of openly examined leadership to interns, counselors, seasonal staff, apprentices, finally, to campers and other program participants.
F&W believes that it is important to take our work into the larger community. Staff, campers and other program participants have the chance to practice their leadership skills while conducting service projects in nearby communities.
