Environmental Sustainability Education Programs
The scenic landscape of F&W provides a wide variety of learning opportunities. The following are samples of our Environmental Education curriculum.
Plants and You
Hands-on learning is emphasized to teach about the incredible kingdom of plants. Learning goals include wild vs. cultivated plants, why we need plants, how to care for plants, annuals vs. perennials, seed dispersal and pollination.
Sample Activities:
- planting/harvesting in our garden
- planting seeds to take home
- artwork with pressed flowers
- explanation and exploration of our beehive
- building a compost pile/exploration of soil
- games that teach about plant life cycles
Habitats
Participants have the opportunity to explore a forest, meadow, pond, lake, floating bog, or stream habitat.
Learning goals include:
- developing an understanding of habitats as they relate to humans, plants, and animals
- exploring and understanding a particular habitat in depth;
- encouraging participants to become better observers of habitats all around them;
- and fostering a sense of wonder of the natural world.
Sample Activities:
- Everyone Needs a Home (discuss what is a habitat?)
- Create a Critter (discuss what are adaptations?)
- Hike to a Habitat
- Evidence of Wildlife Scavenger Hunt
- Stream Study
- Habitat Haiku
Conservation-Based Service Projects**
Work on teambuilding skills while helping various Vermont towns to improve the landscape. Build a trail, restore a section of river, or assess the water quality of a local lake or stream.
**These programs must be scheduled one season in advance.
